I bought this not knowing if it would work for what I needed, which was to play DVD files from a HDD on a TV that isn't near a network source. I am happy to say that it does. I have all my DVDs saved to hard drive. Not condensed or converted or anything, I just make exact copies. I hooked up a 2TB WD external hard drive via USB and was able to access these files just as if they were regular DVDs including menu nav. 

I have a couple other devices that will play the .vob files (like the PS3) through my PC media app. (WMP or TVersity) but they would play them as if they were several different files (which in fact they are) and there would be a "glitch" when they switched over to the next file and there were also problems with it playing the wrong audio file (like the alt. language or commentary track) and without menu control, it just didn't work. Also, needed network access. 

With this product (and the attached HDD), I now basically have a 250 disc DVD changer that could fit in the palm of my hand. 

The one significant flaw, in my opinion, is that the power cord does not seat well at all into the main unit. If you plug it in and don't touch it, you're fine, but if you pick it up to dust around it or something, the cord will come out...for sure. It feels a little cheap but works great. 

I don't care much about viewing compressed video files or text or picture files or listening to music files on this but it does all this as well. I only needed a device to play DVD files from HDD (without computer or network access) and this is the only product I have found that does it for a reasonable price.
